Show Notes

In this episode, I reflect on the difference between belonging and fitting in — and on how much of our lives can be shaped by trying to be accepted, rather than feeling truly at home as ourselves.
I speak about:
growing up in Siberia, where fitting in and not standing out felt like the safest way to move through life
immigration and how moving to a new country changed my understanding of what belonging could be
why belonging in our families is so essential, and how painful it is when it feels conditional
Johann Hari’s work on loneliness and connection
Martha Beck’s idea that each of us carries an inner “everybody” whose imagined judgment shapes our choices more than we often realize
In this conversation, I explore the idea that:
fitting in is often a survival strategy
belonging asks something much deeper
and true belonging may begin with belonging to ourselves first
A few reflection questions to take with you:
In what areas of your life do you feel you are fitting in rather than belonging?
Where did you first learn that belonging could be conditional?
Who is your “everybody” when you imagine what other people will think?
What might change in your life if you chose belonging over fitting in?
The Honest Place is a reflective conversation space about self-worth, identity, leadership, ambition, and the inner questions so many of us carry.
